Important Festivals of Tak Province

“Loi Kratong Sai” is an ancient tradition, practiced by Tak residents for a long timeuntil nowadays. “Loi Kratong Sai” is unique and different from ordinary Loikratong due to the method used in floating Kratongs down the river. Kratong sai are usually made from coconut shells or other natural materials sawn together in a bowl shape and are filled with flammable materials. The people will light up these Kratongs just before floating them one by one down the Mae Ping river, keeping a consistant distance between one another. Therefore, these Kratong Sai will orderly follow one another, seemed like being chained together with a long rope, floating through the river bends and tide. Those lights from several thousands of Kratong Sai will spectacularly glitter and beautifully illuminate the river that night. Every year, the Tak Municipality organizes a competition on Floating Kratong Sai with A Thousand lights. The winner will be awarded His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s Cup. This competition is the only one of this kind in Thailand.
